Kingston School of Dance
- Ebon Gage Directs/Choreographs Cats!
| The Kingston School of Dance’s Artist in residence, Ebon Gage has created quite a stir in Kingston by taking on the job as Director and Choreographer of the famous and well-traveled Andrew Lloyd-Webber Broadway Musical, Cats. Since its first performance on Broadway 26 years ago, Cats has been seen in over 250 cities and 20 countries around the world. Ebon is much-loved at the Kingston School of Dance, where he’s been teaching for 4 years, and has much experience in Choreography for the big and small stage, as well as television and movies. He’s choreographed for TV commercials including Delmonte and Tourism Canada, and for the stage with "West Side Story" (at the Grand Theatre in Kingston), "Celebrate Canada" at the Epcot Center at Disneyworld in Florida, and for "Rainbow World" in Toronto. He also worked on the set of "Doc" with Billy Rae Cyrus. So as you can see, he’s not lacking in the areas of talent, experience or creativity! Ebon hand-picked the cast of 25 singers and dancers (even though the original Broadway production only cast 16) that take part in the musical from among Kingston’s rich source of talent. Among the cast members are four students from the Kingston School of Dance who have put in great performances: Rebecca Banyard (as Victoria), Kay Kenney (as Exotica), Steven Smith (as Coricopo and Macavity) and Laura Varley (as Etcetera). Well done All! They’ve been working full-steam since February of this year, and have pulled off one of the most talked about stage performances in Kingston this year. And there’s another Cats connection to the Kingston School of Dance; long-time musical accompanist, Scott Davey is the Pit Leader of the musical group accompanying the production. Scott has been playing piano at the Kingston School of Dance for several years, and we are very proud of him as well, to say the least! The Kingston School of Dance has one more connection to Cats as well; the dance studios at the school have been used for all rehearsals and coaching for the show! This musical is lots of fun and has received rave reviews in both local newspapers; the Kingston Whig-Standard, and the Kingston This Week. The show is being held at at the Wellington Street Theatre in Kingston and ends on August 18th. |
